Chambers Homers, Saves Game

PROVO -- Ryan Chambers did it all for BYU, leading the Cougars to a 7-5 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo Tuesday, at Larry H. Miller Field.

The win marked the eighth consecutive victory for BYU, upping its overall record to 11-4-1 on the season. CSU-Pueblo dropped to 11-15 with the loss.

The Cougars were led by Chambers, who hit a two-run home run and also came in to pitch in relief to earn his first save of the season.

BYU drew first blood in the game, stringing together four consecutive singles by Brandon Taylor, Ben Saylor, Kory Knell and Chambers to put a three-spot on the board in the second inning. The Thunderwolves responded the next half inning when catcher Danny Cummins hit his first of two homers on the day, a solo blast to deep center.

The Cougars responded in their side of the third. Jeff Hiestand led the inning off with a single and was driven in by a Knell double. Then Chambers came up with a deep, two-run blast down the right field line, his first homer of the season, and it looked like BYU would run away with another game.

CSU-Pueblo wasn't done yet, though. The pesky Division II school would not go away. BYU head coach Vance Law was impressed with the Thunderwolves' perseverance.

"They are a scrappy team, they came ready to play," he said. "I'm glad we got the win, but I'm not happy with the way we finished."

Law was unhappy because after the Cougars grabbed a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, CSU-Pueblo came storming back. The Thunderwolves scored four unanswered runs, highlighted by a fifth-inning Cummins three-run round-tripper.

In the eighth, CSU-Pueblo scored another run and loaded the bases. That's when Law turned to Chambers. Chambers came in and struck out Pueblo second baseman Eric Newby to end the threat. Chambers got some help from Cougars' first baseman Hiestand in the ninth, who turned a nifty unassisted double play with nobody out and a runner on first. Chambers held on and got the save, the first of his collegiate career.

BYU will ride its eight-game winning streak into Albuquerque, N.M., to begin Mountain West Conference play later this week. The Cougars will take on New Mexico in a three-game series Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Game times are 6, 6 and 1 p.m. (MST), respectively. Games will be broadcast on the radio and can be heard on AM 960 (KOVO) on a delayed basis at 7 p.m., on Thursday and Friday and live on Saturday.
