Summer Baseball Honors

Catcher Lars Birkeland of BYU was named to the 2001 NBC (National Baseball Congress) World Series All-America Team last week.

Birkeland, a senior from Salt Lake City, played for the Orange County (California) Scorpions in the 48-team tourney at Wichita, Kansas. He was 10 of 19 from the plate for a .526 batting average during the tournament.

Also playing in that tourney from the Cougars were Justin Su'a and Jeff Hiestand and UVSC transfer Mike Weingarten all of whom played for the Samoan National Team.

BYU teammates Kainoa Obrey and Doug Jackson, from Iolani High School in Honolulu, Hawai'I, also achieved well for the Newport Gulls in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this past summer.

Obrey, a third baseman, was selected as the league's 10th Player Award winner given to the athlete who contributed most while not playing a regular position the majority of the season.

Obrey and Jackson were selected to the NECBL all-star team that played the Cape Cod League all-stars where BYU teammates Matt Carson and Cameron Coughlan were playing this past summer. Obrey ranked second on his team with 30 RBI, tied for third with 10 doubles, tied for first with 17 extra base hits, and was also selected to the All-American Division and All-League teams.
