COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – BYU sophomore Jimmer Fredette and New Mexico junior Roman Martinez have been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week.

Fredette is a first-time player of the week honoree and is the second Cougar this season to earn the award. Lee Cummard was named player of the week on Nov. 17.

A 6-foot-2 guard from Glens Falls, N.Y., Fredette averaged 20.0 points per game while shooting 72.7 percent from the field (16-for-22) and 87.5 percent from the charity stripe in helping BYU to wins against Boise State (94-56) and Portland (91-76) last week. He started the week scoring a career-high 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while tying a career-best with four steals vs. Boise State. Fredette also tallied two assists vs. the Broncos. Against Portland, Fredette scored 17 points (6-for-7 from the field), while also collecting three rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Martinez, a 6-foot-6 forward from El Paso, Texas, led the Lobos to wins at San Diego (57-54) and against Mississippi (103-70). At San Diego, he scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Martinez shot 5-for-8 from the floor, including hitting 2-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Against Mississippi, he collected his second career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds (eight offensive). Martinez’s eight offensive boards were the most for a Lobo player since Danny Granger grabbed eight during the 2004-05 season. Martinez also established a career-high in steals (5), while dishing out four assists vs. the Rebels. On the week, he averaged 15.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor (12-for-21) and 50.0 percent from three-point range (5-for-10).

Fredette has helped lead the Cougars to a 10-0 start this season, BYU’s best start since the 1987-88 team started 17-0. The Cougars are 6-0 at home this season, extending their nation’s best winning streak to 53 games. The streak dates back to the 2005-06 season.
