On BYU's second possession Cummard scored on a tip-in off of a Plaisted miss. That was only the beginning for the freshman as he finished with 23 points as the game's leading scorer.

-- Fernando Malaman made his presence felt in the Cougar lineup, scoring seven points in 2:20 of first-half play while adding a blocked shot on defense. Malaman finished with 11 points.

-- Jackson Emery got into the mix as well, netting his first points as a Cougar with a jump shot from the top of the key midway through the second half. He added a free throw to finish with three points.

-- Coming out of a timeout with 11:41 remaining in the first half, Victoria went on a 9-1 run over the next 1:41 to take its first lead of the game at 18-17.

-- Victoria started slowing the pace of the game when it entered the bonus with 10:59 to go in the first half. BYU did not reach the bonus until :54 left in the first half.

-- BYU's new-look offense started to click in the second half as the Cougars scored 16 points on the fast break.

-- Two players were held out of Friday night's action against the Vikes. Mike Rose did not play due to a laceration to his lip and a dental injury he suffered on Wednesday Nov. 2. Rashaun Broadus is still recovering from an ankle sprain sustained last Friday during practice.

POSTGAME QUOTES

BYU Coach Dave Rose

"In the second half our guys played with a lot more purpose. I really believe that the last 10 to 12 minutes came down to mental toughness."

"For the most part I was pleased with our effort."

"In the first half we were really impatient. A lot of guys were hunting out shots."

"Our half-court offense needs some work; we were very impatient."

"Our effort was really good, but we've got some execution issues to deal with."

Victoria Coach Craig Beaucamp

"We gave them too many easy scores in the second half, which helped them gain confidence."

"BYU has some athletes. They have lots of potential and seem to be a lot deeper this year."
