Cougars share lead in Hawaii

Oscar Alvarez's second-round 65 helped BYU move into a tie for first place

WAHIAWA -- BYU's fifth-ranked men's golf team moved into a tie for first place with Auburn after scoring the best round of the day, a blistering 19-under-par, at the John Burns Intercollegiate on Thursday.

Led by its two All-American's Oscar Alvarez and Jake Ellison, BYU moved up from fifth place into the lead heading into Friday's final round. For the second consecutive tournament, BYU shot a 19-under-par second round to position itself at the top of the leaderboard. Both second-round scores were the best scores posted by any team in the tournament.

"I don't know what it is about the second round, but we just seem to step it up," BYU junior Clay Ogden said. "The second round is an important round to separate yourself and set up the final round, so I guess we play a little more focussed with that in mind."

Both Alvarez and Ellison carded second-round 65s to move them into a tie for fourth place at nine-under-par. If Ellison can continue into Friday's final round, the No. 16 golfer in the nation would earn his fifth consecutive top 10 individual finish and his sixth in seven tournaments on the season.

2006 U.S. Publinks Champion Ogden remained in the top 10 with a three-under-par 69. Fellow junior Nick Becker was two-under on the day and moved into a tie for 38th at three-under-par while Daniel Summerhays also had a two-under 70 and is tied for 48th place at two-under-par. BYU's individual participants Nick Killpack and Greg Hunt are both tied for 79th at two-over-par.

BYU is shooting for its third consecutive victory, something the Cougars haven't done in recent history. Three consecutive tournament victories against other top 25 opponents would send a message to teams across the country and would validate the Cougar's top five national ranking.

"Every win is great because it keeps our momentum going and it really causes other teams to stop and take notice of us," Ellison said. "We're playing really well right now."
