Pinehurst, N.C. (August 22, 2008) – Robbie Fillmore’s quest for the U.S. Amateur match play championship came to an end on Thursday morning after he was defeated 3 and 2 to Oklahoma’s Kevin Tway in the second round.
Fillmore was making a strong run to become the match play champion of the tournament as the No. 1 seed after earning the stroke play championship on Tuesday, which he won with an astonishing 6-under 134 effort. He defeated Ohio’s Ross Beal 3 and 2 in Wednesday’s opening round of match play.
Fillmore shot a few bogeys on the opening holes and was not able to pick up the lost ground. Tway was able to counter Fillmore’s attempts to come back by winning the ensuing holes that Fillmore had won.
Tway is the son of former PGA champion Bob Tway and a sophomore at Oklahoma State University. He went on to face Derek Fathauer of Florida in the afternoon and was defeated.
