PROVO -- As the 2008-09 season approaches, the BYU women’s swim and dive team looks to achieve their third-straight Mountain West Conference title as the men defend the regular-season MWC title and look to attain the MWC Championship trophy.
“We make the schedule, so we try to make something that will be challenging,” said head coach Tim Powers. “The conference competition is going to be tough, but we aren’t practicing to come in second.”
The Cougars will dive into the Richards Building pool Oct. 10 at 6:00 p.m. for the annual Alumni meet to kick off the season. Later that month, the swimmers and divers will head to TCU for their first MWC action.
In early November the Cougars will head to Long Beach, Calif. for the Lincoln Shootout, formerly known as the Big West Shootout. This event includes teams from the Big West Conference as well as Hawaii, UNLV and Air Force.
“The Lincoln Shootout will be a great challenge,” said Powers. “It’s always good competition at sea level and in the sunshine. We have won it in the past and hope to do well this year as well.”
Because of pool problems at UNLV, the dual meet between the Running Rebels and the Cougars will be taken out of the Lincoln Shootout.
A few weeks later the swimmers will travel back to Long Beach, Calif. for the Nike Cup, which is always a top event for all-time bests.
The team will face CSU, Air Force and Wyoming at home while they will travel to TCU, UNM and Utah.
