COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The BYU men’s team swam their way to a victory against Air Force on Friday, outscoring the Falcons, 180-120.
Jordan Fletcher, Brady Wells, David Armstrong and Garret Beaman started the off the night strong with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. The team was able to capture a time of 1:32.21.
Stott Bushnell had a good showing in the 200 free, taking second place with his time of 1:42.51.
Fletcher was able to tally another first-place finish with his time of 50.85 in the 100 backstroke. Wells grabbed second place in the next event, the 100 breaststroke, with his time of 58.20.
Gary Arthur and Rafael Alfaro gained a 1-2 sweep in the 200 butterfly with Arthur in first at 1:54.71 and Alfaro in second with 1:57.33.
Beaman and Daniel Bates had a similar finish in the 50 free with Beaman recording the first place time of 21.15, and Bates touching in for second at 21.59.
First- and second-place sweeps seemed to be the trend of the night for the Cougars as Nui Harris and Seth Russell grabbed first and second in the 200 backstroke with times of 1:56.57 and 1:56.97, respectively.
Andrew Rutherfurd recorded a first place time of 2:08.47 in the 200 breast, while Fletcher tallied his third first-place finish for the night in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.93.
At 1:56.47, Alfaro accomplished a first place finish in the 200 IM before the team of Bushnell, Samuel Bates, Armstrong and Beaman ended the night with a strong swim in the 400 free relay, touching in at 3:03.62 for first place.
On the boards, Brandon Watson dominated both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. In the 1-meter, Watson scored 377.18 while teammates Travis Day and Kevin Dreesen finished in second and third with scores of 288.97 and 277.72.
In the 3-meter, the BYU divers had yet another 1-2-3 sweep with Watson’s first place score of 384.08, Dreesen’s second place score of 322.28 and Day’s third place score of 316.27.
The Cougars will stay in Colorado for the weekend as they rejoin the women’s team in a face off with Denver University.
