LONG BEACH -- The second day of the Nike Cup saw an impressive performance by BYU freshman Rachel Grant as she finished second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.05. Grant's performance highlighted another full day at the Belmont Pool in Long Beach, Calif., for the Cougars.

"Rachel (Grant) has had a great meet so far," BYU women's coach Stan Crump said. "But the really great thing is that we have not had anybody not record a season's best time so far in this meet. Everyone is improving and that is what we are after."

The BYU men's swimmers saw its most dominating performance in the 100 backstroke as the Cougars had three finishers in the top six. Jorge Azevedo led the top-finishing Cougars in this race with a time of 51.11 as John Ferrell touched the wall just after Azevedo in fourth place while Jacoby Jacobsen finished in sixth.

Natasha and Michelle Menezes and Leilani Roberts all finished in the top 10 of the 200 free on the women's side. Natasha recorded a time of 1:51.13 and came in fifth place, while her sister Michelle finished in 1:52.83 and Leilani completed the event in 1:52.27 to finish in eight and 10th respectively.

BYU senior Travis Price made a big contribution to the Cougar's team score as he finished in fourth place in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.45. Travis' wife, Angela Goodson-Price, also made splashes for the Cougars as she finished in sixth place in the 100 fly with a time of 57.44.

Both the Stanford men and the UCLA women continued their dominance in the team race as they widened their lead over the opposing teams. Stanford now leads by 671 over the second-place Cougar men and the UCLA women are ahead of the rest of the field by 441 points.

The final day of competition in the Nike Cup begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with the finals starting at 6 p.m.
