The men and women's swimming and diving teams are the favorites to repeat as champions of the Mountain West Conference after a preseason coaches' poll was released last week with both teams listed number one.

The men garnered 16 points and four out of five first place votes to solidify their place at the top. Men's head coach Tim Powers said he really didn't pay too much attention to the poll.

"These preseason polls don't mean too much," Powers said. "We are just concentrating on working hard and getting in shape for the season."

The women received 48 points and six out of eight first place votes in their poll. Women's head coach Stan Crump said that even though it was nice to be recognized by peers the preseason poll didn't really affect the team's approach to the season.

"Last year we were two, this year we are number one, it doesn't really matter," Crump said. "Our team is in much better conditioning than it was last year at this time. As long as we can stay healthy we'll be good in February."

Both teams will dive into the pool for their first competition this weekend for the annual Alumni meet Friday, October 15th beginning at 6 p.m.
