BYU Advances to Finals With 30-14 Win Over Utah State

PROVO -- The BYU tennis team defeated Utah State on Friday night, 30-14, in the first round of the Team Tennis Regional Championships held at the BYU indoor tennis courts.

The tournament included men's and women's doubles, men's and women's singles, and a mixed doubles. The scoring goes to six in each category and the total number of sets that each team wins are tallied for the final score. The World Team Tennis rules include no-ad scoring.

"The no-ad rule puts more pressure on the players," said men's coach Jim Osborne. "The rules are a little different. At the first everyone was trying to get used to the rules. Tonight was a learnign experience for everyone."

The Cougars won every set against the Aggies, including Gert Vilms winning in men's singles, 6-4, and Jodi Richardson winning in women's singles, 6-1. Carlos Lozano teamed with Lu Oswald to take mixed doubles, 6-3.

"It was fun and exciting," said women's coach Craig Manning. "It was different. We lost several games to the no-ad rule, but the girls are playing pretty well."

BYU will play Oklahoma tommorrow at 2 p.m. for the championship. Oklahoma defeated Weber State in a close match, 29-25. Utah State and Weber State will play at 11 a.m. for third place. The winner of the tournament advances to the national championships at Stanford in October.
