COLORADO SPRINGS -- Freshman Daniel Hwang was recognized for his academic achievement as the Mountain West Conference released its spring 2008 Academic All-Mountain West Conference team on Thursday.
Hwang recorded a team-high 18 singles wins during the spring season while playing at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 lineup positions. He lost only two conference matches during the regular season and pulled out a tough 6-4, 6-4 win over SDSU's Andre Feliz to clinch the team win for BYU--its first win over a ranked opponent to that point in the season. Hwang finished the spring season with a 13-7 doubles record with teammate Thomas Shubert and together the duo ranked No. 9 in the region.
BYU led the MWC in academics in the Spring, as 148 Cougars were named to the Academic All-MWC team, naming 54 more student-athletes than the second-highest institution.
Spring sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
