Men's Tennis Grab Five All-Conference Honors

Colorado Springs, Colo. (May 1, 2001) -- After winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament last week as the No. 4 seed, the BYU men's tennis team grabbed five all-conference honors. Eric Nyman was named the MWC Freshman of the Year, head coach Jim Osborne was selected as the Coach of the Year and Gert Vilms and Carlos Lozano were selected to the all-conference team in doubles and for the second consecutive year in singles.

Nyman, from Upsala, Sweden, was 12-8 in singles matches this season. He also teamed with Michael Gysens and Matt Stohl to complile an 11-7 overall doubles record. Nyman defeated Danny Erez in the MWC Championship match to help the Cougars to the victory.

Vilms is a junior from Tallin, Estonia and has played at the No. 1 and No. 2 spot this year for BYU. He has a 22-9 record in singles, including a 19-2 record in the region. In the MWC Tournament, Vilms defeated 22nd-ranked Oliver Maiberger, helping the Cougars surprise the No. 1 Aztecs in the second round.

Lozano is a sophomore from Tlalnepantla, Mexico, who has shared the No. 1 and 2 spots with Vilms this season. Lozano holds a 22-10 sinlges record, including a 18-4 regional record. Lozano won all five matches he was in at the conference tournament, including three consecutive singles victories.

As a doubles team, Lozano and Vilms are 24-6 overall and 18-1 in the region, with their only loss at the hands of San Diego State's Maiberger and Webster. The two teams faced each other again in the MWC tournament, but did not finish because the Cougars had already won the doubles point. Lozano and Vilms are ranked No. 35 in the country.

By winning the MWC Tournament, BYU head coach Jim Osborne led his fourth-seeded Cougars to their first MWC title. The Cougars are 14-9 overall and 5-3 versus the MWC. The 13-year head coach earns his first conference title as BYU head coach.

San Diego State's Maiberger was named the MWC Player of the Year. Maiberger, Utah's David Mercier and BYU's Vilms and Lozano were the only players to repeat as all-conference performers.
