Colorado Spring, Colo. (March 24, 2010) – Senior Cassidy Mears was named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for his performance in last Saturday’s match against San Diego. This is the second time Mears has received the honor and the fifth time a BYU men’s tennis player has garnered the title this season. Alexandra Kovacs of Wyoming represented the women’s side this week.
Mears, who hails from Shawnee, Kan., went a combined 2-0 last Friday to lead 35th-ranked BYU to a 6-1 win over 58th-ranked San Diego in Provo, Utah. Against the Toreros, Mears defeated Thibaut Visy (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) in three sets at the No. 3 singles spot to clinch the nonconference match for the Cougars. Earlier in the dual, Mears teamed with freshman Spencer Smith to down Visy/Casey Powers (8-6) at the No. 2 doubles position, helping BYU secure the doubles point. The Cougars snapped a two-match losing streak with Friday’s victory and are 14-3 overall.
Kovacs, a product of Esztergom, Hungary, went 6-0 last week to help Wyoming notch a 2-1 record on its road trip against Loyola Marymount (W, 7-0), Cal State Northridge (L, 3-4) and Cal State Fullerton (W, 7-0). On Thursday against the Lions, Kovacs defeated Estelle LaPorte (6-1, 6-2) at No. 2 singles, after teaming with junior Rebecca Berger to down Jane Pringle/Elisaveta Pironkova (8-4) at No. 2 doubles. Kovacs remained perfect on Friday, netting a victory over Nina Jawarowski (6-0, 6-3) at No. 2 singles, after teaming with Berger to defeat Jawarowski/Whitney Paluch (8-4). She capped off her undefeated weekend by moving to the No. 1 singles and doubles positions, respectively, against the Titans on Sunday. At the top of the singles lineup, Kovacs notched a straight-sets victory over Tiffany Mai (6-2, 6-3), after teaming with Berger to down Mai/Monica Rodriguez (8-3).
