Academic All-District Nominates Simkins, Metcalf and Moon

Chad Simkins was recently nominated to the Verizon Academic All-District first team sponsored by CoSIDA along with junior Lindsey Metcalf while Katie Moon was named to the second team.

PROVO -- With grade point averages all over 3.8, Chad Simkins, Lindsey Metcalf and Katie Moon were selected to the Verizon Academic All-District team sponsored by CoSIDA for their great performances in the classroom and in track and field.

Senior distance runner Chad Simkins maintains a 3.84 GPA in accounting while running a regional qualifying time of 1:50.30 in the 800 meters at the Stanford Invitational and taking third at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Championships this season. Simkins also was named to the Academic All-Conference team last year.

"Chad is a fabulous student in the masters of accounting program," BYU men's coach Mark Robison said. "Plus, he's a great athlete, a team captain and a great leader on and off the field."

Simkins has finished in the top three in the 800m at the MWC Championships for the last three years. At the 2003 MWC Outdoor Championships, Simkins won the 800m with a time of 1:49.88, and placed 12th at the 2003 NCAA National Outdoor Championships. He was also third at the 2003 MWC Indoor Championships with a time of 1:49.80.

"He's had a great career," Robison said. "Being an All-American last season was a great accomplishment for him, and he barely missed nationals this year."

On the women's side, Lindsey Metcalf was selected to the Academic All-District first team while Katie Moon was named to the second team.

Not only has four-time All-American Lindsey Metcalf won four conference championships in the high jump, she also placed fifth in the 2003 NCAA National Outdoor Championships and looks for another top finish this season.

"Lindsey is a great athlete and a very hard worker," BYU women's coach Craig Poole said. "She's a heck of a competitor, a wonderful person and very dedicated to BYU."

She also keeps a 3.90 GPA in early childhood education and is minoring in management, and teaching English as a second language. Last year, the MWC named her to their Academic All-Conference team. As a member of the BYU women's volleyball team, Lindsey has one of the highest hitting percentages and blocking averages on the team.

Senior Katie Moon maintains a 3.91 GPA in botany while running three seasons a year in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track.

During the cross country season, Katie took third at the Pre-Mountain West Conference meet with a time of 22:29 and was fifth in the 3000m at the Mountain State Invitational with a time of 10:28.09 during the indoor season. At the BYU Wells Fargo Invitational, she finished seventh in the 1,500m this season.
