BYU junior Sean Richardson and TCU junior Mychal Dungey have been selected as the Mountain West Conference men’s outdoor track & field co-athletes of the week.
Richardson, from Silver City, N.M., set a new Mountain West Conference record in the javelin with a mark of 232’-3.0” (70.82m) at the Spring Break Invitational in Irvine, Calif., last weekend. That distance broke the Conference record by more than six and a half feet, broke his previous personal best by 15 feet and marks the second-best throw in BYU program history. Competing against Cornell, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, Richardson won the event by over 59 feet. His mark ranks second in the country so far this season.
A product of Austin, Texas, Dungey opened his outdoor season by winning the men’s 200-meter dash with a conference-leading time of 20.92 seconds at the Horned Frog Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas, which also ranks first in the nation this spring. Over the weekend, he also helped TCU’s men’s 4x100-meter relay team clock a season-opening time of 39.48 seconds, which ranks first in both the NCAA and MWC this spring and fifth in the world standings (according to IAAF). Dungey rounded out his first event of the outdoor season by placing fifth in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 10.32 seconds.
