Vaulter Earns MWC Athlete of the Week

BYU junior Trent Powell is this weeks MWC Athlete of the Week.

PROVO -- After last weeks NCAA qualifying performance on the pole vault, BYU junior Trent Powell was named Mountain West Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week.

Powell, native of Mesa, Ariz. vaulted in front on his home crowd this weekend for his season best at the Mesa Track and Field Classic. His vault of 17-08.50 (5.40m) is his new season best and inches closer and closer to his all-time best of 17-10.50. Powell's vault stands third on the all-time MWC pole vault list.

Powell has been a consistent performer for the Cougars. In 2003 he finished first in the pole vault at the Mountain State Games, second at the MWC Indoor Championships, third at the NCAA Indoor Championships, second at the MWC Outdoor Championships and ended the season second at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with his personal record to become a two-time All-American.

Powell shares the award with the women's Athlete of the Week, San Diego State senior Tonette Dyer.
