Cougars Complete Weekend Sweep at Ohio State

COLUMBUS -- The eighth-ranked BYU men's volleyball team improved its overall record to 3-3 on the season with a 3-1 victory over No. 12 Ohio State on Saturday. The Cougars posted scores of 30-23, 30-23, 28-30, 30-25 in front of 543 fans at OSU's St. John Arena, winning their second straight match against the Buckeyes.

"We're getting better each time we play," BYU head coach Tom Peterson said. "It was good to travel such a long distance and still be able to pick up these two wins. When this team gets on a roll, we can do some good things. We saw that this weekend."

Three different Cougars recorded double-digit kills, including senior Jonathan Alleman who posted a team-leading 16 kills. After a 19-kill performance on Friday, Fernando Pessoa picked up 15 more on Saturday, hitting a team-best .462 at the net. Joe Hillman recorded his sixth straight double-digit kill performance, recording 10 kills on 28 swings. After sitting out Friday's match, Carlos Moreno returned to the lineup to pace the BYU offense with a match-high 52 assists. Moreno also chipped in four kills and seven blocks.

Defensively, BYU forced 33 Ohio State hitting errors, managing only 57 kills on 141 attempts (.170). The Cougars out-blocked the Buckeyes 15.5-10.5. Victor Batista led the BYU effort with nine blocks on the night, including two solos. Libero Shawn Olmstead was credited with a match-high nine digs.

In game one, three straight OSU errors gave the Cougars a 24-20 lead. BYU held to the lead and despite hitting just .125 in the game, Pessoa kill ended the game at 30-23.

Leading 22-21 in game two, three consecutive kills by Alleman gave BYU a 25-21 lead. The Cougars finished off the game with a Pessoa kill for a 30-23 win. BYU hit .560 for the game to .114 for Ohio State.

A four-point Buckeye run in game three, including three straight Cougar errors gave Ohio State at 24-20 lead. The two teams exchanged points to 28-27 when an OSU kill set game point at 29-27. A Batista kill made it 29-28 but Scott Spurlock's kill ended the game at 30-28 in favor of Ohio State. The Cougars hit .293 for the game to .171 for the Buckeyes.

BYU held an 18-16 lead in game four and with kills by Hillman and Pessoa, along with two OSU errors, opened a 22-16 lead over the Buckeyes. Ohio State could not catch up and Brigham Young, with another Pessoa kill, won the game 30-25, winning the match 3-1. The Cougars hit .303 for the game to OSU's .200.

All totaled, 12 different players saw action in the Cougars' four-game win, marking the first appearance of the season for some of the younger players.

"We were able to see a lot of different guys play tonight," Peterson said. "We used some different combinations so we could look at how certain guys compete in game situations, how they do under pressure. It's always good when we can get some of the younger guys some match experience."

The Cougars will next travel to second-ranked Long Beach State for a pair of MPSF matches on Wednesday, Jan. 28 and Friday, Jan. 30. With a current 1-1 record in league play, BYU will look to improve its standing in the MPSF.

"Next week's matches are going to be big," Peterson said. "Long Beach State is a very good team, they're ranked second in the nation. We will need to be at our best in order for us to win those matches. We're going to have to serve well and play good defense. We're going to have to show some consistency."
