Four Players Received Academic All-Conference Honors

WOODLAND -- The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation named four members of the BYU men's volleyball team to Academic All-Conference for the 2003 season.

Jon Alleman, Fernando Pessoa, Mike Burke and Luka Slabe received academic citations for their contributions in the classroom and outstanding play on this year's MPSF Tournament champion team that earned a second-place finish in the NCAA Tournament.

To be eligible for selection student-athletes must have a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically, completed one full academic year at his institution prior to the season for which the award is being received and competed in fifty percent or more of the institution's competition.

Luka Slabe, a 6-1 senior outside hitter from Ljubljana, Slovenia , competed in 75 games on the season and registered double-digit kills on three occasions. Slabe hit a personal-season-best 12 kills against Lewis in the NCAA Championship match on May 3. He also hit over .600 in two matches on the season and added 61 digs and 22 blocks.

Jon Alleman, a 6-3 junior opposite hitter from Yorba Linda, Calif., earned Second-Team All-American honors, was named to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament Team and received All-MPSF Second-Team honors. He registered double-digit kills in 25 of 30 matches, including two 30-kill matches and led BYU in kills per game (3.93) and kills on the season (440).

Fernando Pessoa, a 6-4 junior libero from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, received All-MPSF Honorable Mention honors and competed in 80 games on the season. Pessoa led the team with 2.20 digs per game, totaling 176 digs on the season and registered double-digit digs in eight matches.

Mike Burke, a 6-8 sophomore middle blocker from Salt Lake City, received All-MPSF Honorable Mention honors in his first year playing collegiate volleyball and competed in 110 of 116 games on the season. Burke hit over a .500 average in 14 matches, ranked third in the MPSF in hitting percent with a .468 average per game and fourth in the MPSF in blocking with an average 1.28 per game.

Alleman, Pessoa and Burke will be returning to the Cougar line up for the upcoming 2004 season.
