PROVO -- Seniors Rob Neilson and Brian Rowley were named 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men's Volleyball Academic All-Conference selections, the MPSF announced Wednesday.
Neilson and Rowley earned spots on the team for maintaining a cumulative GPA over 3.0, having completed at least one full academic year at BYU and participating in 50 percent or more of the team's matches. Neilson is a neuroscience major with a 3.29 GPA and Rowley is working towards a master's degree in civil engineering and holds a 3.89 GPA.
For Neilson, a setter from Pacific Palisades, Calif., this is the third-consecutive season he has been named Academic All-MPSF. In 2006 he set the Cougars to a .324 hitting percentage and was eighth in the nation in assists, averaging 13.11 per game. He also hit .357 and was second on the team in digs per game at 1.56. Neilson also received All-MPSF Honorable Mention honors.
Rowley, a libero from San Diego, Calif., is also a repeat honoree, having earned Academic All-MPSF status in 2005. In 2006 he led the team in digs with 177 total and a 1.97 per game average. Rowley set a career high and tied the BYU rally scoring record with 16 digs in a comeback win over USC on Feb. 11. He recorded the second-highest rally scoring total with 15 digs against Hawai`i on April 15. ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA recognized Rowley for his accomplishments by naming him to the Academic All-District 8 at-large team.
