Pessoa Named MPSF Player of the Week

Senior Fernando Pessoa led BYU with 20 and 22 kills for both matches over No. 2 Long Beach State last week.

PROVO -- After BYU upset No. 2 Long Beach State twice in five-game matches last week, senior outside hitter Fernando Pessoa was named Molten MPSF Player of the Week for his performance in leading the Cougars to 3-1 conference record (5-3 overall).

Pessoa tallied 42 kills (4.2 pg), two aces, 17 digs (1.7 pg) and seven blocks in both matches. He also hit .310 for the week and led BYU in kills both nights. His 22 kills in Friday's match set a career-high and broke his previous record (20) just two nights before.

This award is Pessoa's second for the season. He was previously named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week for Jan.19-23 after leading the Cougars 3-0 over Cal State Northridge on Jan.16. Since switching positions from libero to outside hitter, Pessoa has become one of the Cougars' top contributors offensively and defensively.

BYU has now moved into second place in the MPSF and is currently ranked fourth in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll. The Cougars will take on No. 12 Pacific at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday night at the Smith Fieldhouse.
