The Cougars joined many seasoned teams in NCAA competition in 1990 and have since become a national competitor. They've earned themselves three national titles in 1999, 2001 and 2004, and have made appearances in the Final Four on four different occassions since 1990. The National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship provides for a single-elimination tournament, comprising four teams in a Final Four-type setting. One team will be selected from each of the West, Midwest and East regions through automatic qualification; and one team will be selected at large. The following conferences have been granted automatic qualification for the championship:
East—Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association
Midwest—Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association
West—Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
