SAN DIEGO—A 4-0 upset by BYU baseball over No. 29 San Diego State Monday afternoon snapped a four-game Cougar losing streak in a non-league contest.

Defense improves Monday, offense continues to earn praise

PROVO, Utah — In its first practice since the spring scrimmage, the BYU football team took to the turf in the Indoor Practice Facility Monday morning to begin the fifth and final week of spring drills.

The team conducted its 13th practice session with a return to its usual practice format. BYU will wrap up spring on Friday with its annual Alumni Day.

In the 11-on-11 team segments on Monday, the defense made several plays that slowed the offense’s progression downfield.

PROVO, Utah – Matt Underwood and Jake Langlois combined for 26 kills in a four-set loss (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 18-25) to No. 5 UC Irvine at home Saturday night.

Jake Taylor earns another first-team All-America honor

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- With a fourth-place finish in the men's 200-yard backstroke (1:39.87), junior Jake Taylor earned his second All-America honor Saturday night at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

"I feel so good, and honestly I'm almost relieved that it's over," Taylor said after his final race. "I'm so glad I was able to accomplish the goals for myself and I'm looking forward to taking a little swimming break and getting rejuvenated before next season."

SAN DIEGO — No. 29 San Diego strengthened its grip on first place in the West Coast Conference on Saturday afternoon with a 13-4 victory over BYU baseball.

As it had the previous two games, San Diego (16-9 overall, 8-1 in West Coast Conference) jumped out to an early lead, but the Cougars (11-16, 4-5) did battle back once to narrow that gap to 6-3 in the fourth inning.

SAN DIEGO – PJ Conlon handcuffed BYU baseball, pitching six innings en route to a 19-3 victory for No. 29 San Diego.

The league-leading Toreros (15-9 overall, 7-1 in West Coast Conference) increased their first-place margin as Conlon improved to 4-1, leading 18-0 when he left the game. The Cougars (11-15, 4-4) did have one silver lining in the relief performance of Mason Marshall.

PROVO, Utah – The No. 6 BYU men’s volleyball team fell in four sets to No. 5 UC Irvine (25-20, 19-25, 27-29, 25-23) at the Smith Fieldhouse Friday night.

"We thought we had a pretty good report against them and knew what we wanted to do, but struggled after the first set," BYU volleyball head coach Chris McGown said. "We need to help our guys be better in those tight situations and hopefully we can carry some of the momentum we had in the beginning tonight to tomorrow night's match."
