Softball travels to Las Vegas for Easton Desert Classic

PROVO, Utah— After going 2-3 in its first tournament of the 2013 season, the BYU softball team will travel to Las Vegas in hopes of improving its record as it plays No. 20/23 Hawai’i, Oregon State, Louisiana Monroe, Cal State Fullerton and Portland State in the Easton Desert Classic Feb. 14-16.

Two WCC games on tap this week

Entering the week, BYU women’s basketball is in third place in the latest West Coast Conference standings with a 7-3 mark. On Thursday night the Cougars (16-7) host Santa Clara (13-11, 5-6) at 7 p.m. MST in a “pink” game for breast cancer awareness. The Cougars and Broncos matchup will be broadcast live on BYUtv. Then on Saturday, BYU is at Pepperdine (4-18, 1-10) in a 2 p.m. PST tip off. That game airs live on BYU Radio.

Perfect 10 Challenge on Friday in Oklahoma City

PROVO, Utah – After setting a new season high in back-to-back weeks, the BYU women’s gymnastics team sets out on one of its toughest meets of the year, the Perfect 10 Challenge on Friday at 7 p.m. CST at the Cox Arena and Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

“We are moving along,” head coach Brad Cattermole said. “It’s hard to look back and say you’ve had a perfect meet. There are always things that could be better here and there or things to improve on.”

Series in Texas opens season

New BYU coach Mike Littlewood begins the 2013 baseball season with a Friday doubleheader against Northern Colorado at the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas.

On Saturday, the Cougars continue tournament play against Northern Illinois at 10 a.m. CST, and in the nightcap versus host Texas Tech at 6 p.m.  Friday’s doubleheader vs. UNC is at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

First road trip of the season for No. 1 BYU

PROVO, Utah - After ten straight home matches, the No. 1 BYU men’s volleyball team gears up for its first road trip of the season as it visits No. 5 Pepperdine Feb. 15 and No. 10 USC Feb. 16.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association ranked BYU No. 1 for the fourth-straight week. The last time the Cougars accomplished the feat was in 2008 when BYU held the top spot for seven-straight weeks between Jan. 8 – Feb. 19.

In the weeks leading up to the jersey retirement for Mel Hutchins and Roland Minson, BYUcougars.com will share excerpts from the book Forgotten Champions by Rocky Steele. Published in 2011, Forgotten Champions remembers BYU’s 1951 NIT Championship. The jersey retirement game will be Feb. 16 against Portland in the Marriott Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
