No. 24 volleyball returns home for two conference matchups

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s volleyball team heads home to the Smith Fieldhouse to take on conference foes Santa Clara and San Francisco on Thursday and Saturday.

The Cougars improved to 12-3 (5-0 WCC) last week with a four-set road win against Pepperdine and a thrilling five-set road victory over Loyola Marymount. BYU remains the only undefeated team in West Coast Conference play.

Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds, BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy and Notre Dame placekicker/punter Kyle Brindza have been named FBS Independent Players of the Week, for games played through Saturday, Oct. 5.  Reynolds receives the honors on Offense, Van Noy is cited on Defense, and Brindza is recognized on Special Teams. 

BYU begins WCC play with San Francisco, No. 18 Santa Clara

The No. 22 BYU women's soccer team begins West Coast Conference play on the road this week with games against San Francisco on Thursday and Santa Clara on Saturday. BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood is also one win away from her 300th career victory.

BYU is the defending WCC champion and hasn't lost a conference game since 2011.

Cougars escape Lions, remain unbeaten in conference play

LOS ANGELES – Junior outside hitter Tambre Haddock led the BYU women’s volleyball team to a five-set (23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-25, 15-11) victory over league opponent Loyola Marymount on Saturday to give the Cougars a 5-0 start in conference play.

    BYU increases its all-time lead over Utah State to 46-34-3 and has won 13 of the last 14 matchups. The last time the Cougars topped the Aggies in Logan was in 2008 with a score of 34-14. BYU is 69-10 under Bronco Mendenhall when allowing 24 points or less.

    Sophomore Taysom Hill had a career night as he threw for three touchdowns and 278 yards. He came into the game with just one TD pass this season. He also threw for a career long of 60 yards.

    LOGAN, Utah – Mitch Mathews had three touchdown receptions to lead BYU football to a 31-14 victory against Utah State at Romney Stadium Friday night.

    "I thought our offensive balance improved," BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "I thought our execution also improved, and we took the ball away a few more times. So overall, progress and a good win." 

    No. 22 Cougars upset No. 20 Baylor 2-1

    WACO, Texas - The No. 22 BYU women's soccer team took down No. 20 Baylor 2-1 in the Cougars' final non-conference game of the season on Friday night. The win is the second road win over a ranked opponent this season for the Cougars.

    "This is a big win for us coming off a couple of losses," BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood said. "Anytime you get a big win on the road it gives you momentum going forward."

    Shields leads Cougars to defeat four ranked teams at Notre Dame

    SOUTH BEND, Ind. (Oct. 4, 2013)--Sophomore Natalie Shields led the No. 28 BYU women’s cross country team to a fourth place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday. 

    The Cougars outperformed four Top 30 opponents including No. 4 Duke, No. 19 Notre Dame, No. 20 Butler, and No. 30 Princeton. No. 1 Florida State won the meet, followed by No. 15 New Mexico and West Coast Conference rival No. 24 San Francisco finished in third. There were 198 women from 24 schools in the scored  5K race.

    MALIBU, Calif. – Sophomore Alexa Gray led the BYU women’s volleyball team to a four-set (25-20, 25-21, 16-25, 25-16) victory over conference foe Pepperdine Thursday night to remain undefeated in league play.

    “I was proud of the heart and fight we showed at times tonight,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “I thought it was a team effort in a lot of ways.”
