4x400 clinches school record at MPSF Championships

SEATTLE—The 4x400m relay team smashed a school record and led the BYU women’s track and field team to tie for a seventh place finish at the MPSF Championships in Seattle.

SEATTLE—Jared Ward and Braydon Bringhurst led a group of Cougars at the MPSF Championships who set personal bests and qualified for the upcoming NCAA Indoor meet.

“We had some great performances,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “We went in with overall team goals to get 36 personal bests between the men and the women and we came within one of that, so it was an overall good team performance.”

SAN DIEGO – Tyler Haws finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the BYU men’s basketball team to a 78-70 victory over San Diego on the road in its last conference game on Saturday. With the win, BYU clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament in Las Vegas.

PROVO, Utah – Behind Jennifer Hamson’s 21 points, BYU women’s basketball beat San Diego 71-58 at the last home game of the season on senior night.

"There are moments when this team can be a machine," head coach Jeff Judkins said. "They executed defensively and offensively. We have so many weapons, tonight we had four girls in double figures. Each of them had their turn in spurts and that's what makes this team great."

ST. GEORGE, Utah—Senior co-captain Brock Whitney and his teammates had field days in BYU baseball’s doubleheader sweep Friday over Seattle University, 8-2 and 4-2.

The Cougar batters outhit Seattle 27-17 as rain fell throughout the day at BYU’s home away from home, Bruce Hurst Field. BYU improved to 4-8, while Seattle fell to 5-6 as play began an hour earlier to squeeze in the games between storms.

Gymnasts take second in tri-meet at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The BYU gymnastics team scored a 195.325 to take second in a tri-meet on the road against nationally ranked Michigan and Kent State.

"We had a great meet," assistant coach Dawn Cattermole said. "I think as the season goes on, our girls are gaining more confidence and they want to perform well."

No. 8 Michigan took first place with a 197.200 and No. 23 Kent State rounded out the group with a score of 194.275.

Beeston, Hamson garner WCC academic honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. –Seniors Kim Beeston and Jennifer Hamson have been named to the 2013-14 West Coast Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic Team, the league announced Friday. Ten student-athletes were put on this year’s list. 

The honor is the third straight for both of BYU’s seniors. Beeston has a 3.64 GPA and is majoring in public health, while Hamson has a 3.51 GPA in exercise science.

Hansen, Poulson highlight 7-3 defeat of Seattle

St. George, Utah—Second baseman Trace Hansen’s bat and glove helped BYU to a 7-3 victory Thursday over Seattle University after a four-hour rain delay at Bruce Hurst Field.

BYU takes down No. 2 Tennessee

Katie Manuma homered twice against No. 2 Tennessee.

SAN DIEGO – Katie Manuma homered twice to hand No. 2 Tennessee its first loss of the season before San Diego State won 2-0 in a pitcher’s duel in the night cap.

“It was a great effort today in both games,” BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. “We played very well against Tennessee. We hung right in there and got a great win for our program. We played well against San Diego State, but their pitcher threw a heck of a game.“
