San Francisco Game Notes

After winning three-straight at home to improve to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in WCC play, BYU will hit the road to take on San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m. PST in War Memorial Gymnasium. Thursday's game will be televised live on ESPNU and broadcast live on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM and BYUcougars.com.

Sander named MPSF Player of the Week

PROVO, Utah—BYU outside hitter Taylor Sander was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week for his performances against Cal State Northridge and then-No. 1 Long Beach State.

Sander totaled 38 kills on the weekend, including a season-high 24 against Long Beach State. The senior outside hitter also had 11 digs against the 49ers, leading then-No. 9 BYU to a 3-1 upset Saturday at the Smith Fieldhouse.

Johnson named MRGC Gymnast of the Week

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Mountain Rim Gymnastics Championship named Makenzie Johnson the Gymnast of the Week for her performance in the quad meet held at the University of Utah last weekend. Johnson becomes the first gymnast to win the award in the inaugural season of the MRGC. 

Cougars return from Puerto Rico with full schedule ahead

PROVO, Utah – Mid-season training in Puerto Rico is over for the BYU swim and dive teams which means it’s time for the Cougars to head into the last half of their season schedule.

“It was a great experience for our team to train in Puerto Rico,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “It provided great training for our swimmers and for our divers as well. I feel really good where we’re at right now. We’re in really good shape.”

The big news in conference play this week was Portland's 82-73 upset of Gonzaga. It was the Bulldogs' first loss in West Coast Conference play and helped tighten up the standings.

Tyler Haws named WCC Player of the Week

Tyler Haws was named WCC Player of the week after his performances against Pepperdine and LMU in which he scored a total of 66 points, shot 47.6% from the floor, 57.1% from the arc, and 95.7% from the stripe.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named BYU junior guard Tyler Haws its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13, 2014.

Haws averaged 33.0 points while leading BYU to wins over Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount. For the week, Haws shot 47.6 percent from the field, 57.1 percent from 3-point range and 95.7 percent from the free throw line.
