Four home runs lead Cougars to doubleheader sweep

Stockton, Calif. – BYU softball utilized four home runs to defeat Pacific 3-2 in the first game and 8-0 to finish the doubleheader sweep on Friday.

“Obviously these two wins were huge for our program and our chances to win the conference this year," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "The team played great in both games and both Tori [Almond] and McKenna [Bull] were lights out on the mound to set the tone for us.”

Robinson named Academic All-District VIII

PROVO, Utah -- Third baseman Dillon Robinson of BYU has been voted to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII baseball team.

Robinson, who has a 3.53 cumulative grade point average in finance, was the only player from the West Coast Conference selected by CoSida (College Sports Information Directors of America).

The junior from Pleasant Grove currently ranks No. 29 in the nation with a .390 batting average. Robinson now advances to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration.

GRADUATION: Chris Howard (exercise science), Chunner Nyberg and Desmond Poulson (both in sociology) and former Cougar pitcher Marc Oslund (humanities) all graduated last month from BYU. Oslund is now teaching LDS Seminary classes and has his eye on getting a doctorate in North Carolina where he served as a missionary.

Starr, Snyder help take series opener 11-4

PROVO, Utah -- A seventh-run fifth inning for BYU baseball led to an 11-4 victory over Gonzaga. Parker Starr led the Cougars with three hits and two RBI, while JC Snyder drove in three runs and was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Men's volleyball falls in NCAA semifinals

CHICAGO—BYU men’s volleyball finished its 2014 season with a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 29-27, 15-12) loss to Stanford in the NCAA tournament semifinals Thursday in Chicago.

"It had to be one of the best semifinals that's been played in this tournament in a long, long time," BYU head coach Chris McGown said. "We're clearly disappointed with the result, but I thought that we did everything we could. We played as hard as we possibly could, and ultimately they got a few plays that went their way."

Sander named AVCA Player of the Year

CHICAGO—BYU senior outside hitter Taylor Sander received the 2014 American Volleyball Coaches Association Player of the Year award Wednesday.

"It feels good to win," Sander said. "It’s just a lot of work that goes into it. Having such a great team is of course helpful. They’ve got my back and they’ve pushed me to be a better player in practice. I wouldn’t be here without my team. I’m grateful for my family and all the people that have helped me get to where I am."
