BYU Wins WAC Tournament

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The BYU softball team won the Western Athletic Conference Tournament title in a clean sweep, defeating No. 3-seed Fresno State 8-3 on Saturday.

The Cougars will play in the NCAA Tournament for an eighth-straight year, with placement announced during the Selection Show on Sunday at 8 p.m. MT on ESPNU and espn3.com.

Yuan Finishes 41st at Regionals

ERIE, Colo. –After being tied for 71st after one round at the NCAA regionals, BYU’s Maggie Yuan moved up 30 spots over the next two days, finishing tied for 41st. 

The tournament was Yuan’s last as a Cougar and caps off a terrific final season. The BYU senior finished in the top 20 in eight of her 10 tournaments this season.

"It was a great effort," BYU coach Carrie Roberts said. "She battled and I'm very proud of her."

Track Teams Improve at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA – Several athletes on the BYU men’s and women’s track and field teams improved their marks at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

For the second time this season junior Nachelle Mackie ran one of the top times in the nation in the 800 meters. Mackie finished in 2:02.49, the second-fastest time run by a collegian this season. Mackie ran the fastest time by a collegian at the Mt. SAC Relays when she finished in 2:01.11.

Waves Come From Behind Again

MALIBU, Calif. — For the third straight day Pepperdine came from behind to defeat BYU's baseball team, completing a sweep with an 8-7 victory on Saturday.

Pepperdine (28-19, 12-6 West Coast Conference) used a four-run sixth inning to chase Cougar starter Adam Miller from the game and take an 8-6 lead. The depleted Cougar pitching staff could not stifle Pepperdine in that sixth inning.

Pepperdine Wins, 9-5

MALIBU, Calif. —A 5-0 Cougar lead evaporated Friday as Pepperdine got a five-run rally in the eighth to defeat BYU baseball, 9-5.

For the second day in a row, second baseman Joe Sever accounted for the game-winning RBI as Pepperdine (27-19, 11-6 West Coast Conference) pulled within a game of league-leading San Diego.  Sever’s two-run, two-out single broke a 5-5 deadlock.

Maggie Takes Round Two by Storm

EIRE, Colo.—With birdies on three of the final four holes of the day, BYU senior Maggie Yuan skyrocketed up the leaderboard to 19th after round two of the NCAA Regionals on Friday.

“It was great to recover from yesterday,” Yuan said.

After round one Yuan was tied for 70th, but after shooting the third-best score among all competitors in round two, the senior put herself into contention going into the final day.

Triumph Over No. 11 Hawai'i

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The BYU softball team will play in the championship game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after putting together a 6-4 win over No. 11 Hawai'i on Friday.

The victory is the 13th in a row for BYU, the third-longest win streak in program history, putting the second-seeded Cougars in the final with a chance to take home the title the automatic NCAA qualifying bid at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Braithwaite Signs With Cougars

Collin Braithwaite, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound, catcher/outfielder from Gilbert, Ariz., has signed a letter of intent with BYU baseball.

Braithwaite is a senior at Perry High School where he was selected to the All-Chandler District Baseball Team and was second-team All-Section Three.

This season he batted .416, hit seven home runs, 13 doubles, four triples, with an .888 slugging percentage and .966 fielding percentage.

Cougars Advance in WAC Tournament

Senior Delaney Willard had two doubles and four RBI for BYU in the win over Louisiana Tech.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - A trio of doubles and clinical field play gave No. 2-seed BYU softball a 6-1 win over No. 6-seed Louisiana Tech in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament second round on Thursday.

BYU (41-13, 15-4), competing for the first time this week after earning a first-round bye, put together an all-around game to beat the Lady Techsters who run-ruled No. 3-seed Fresno State 17-7 behind five home runs earlier.
