BYU Hoops Mailbag Week Five

The mailbag returns at the more-or-less first third point of the season. There are still two weeks before the Cougars jump into West Coast Conference play and two Pac-12 opponents are left before that happens. On to the questions.

The Cougars are scoring a lot of points this season, even when they lose. Has that affected other things or are more points the only unique part of the season so far?

Hamson leads Cougars over Wildcats for best start in school history

OGDEN, Utah – Jennifer Hamson led BYU women’s basketball to a 90-85 win on the road at Weber State on Tuesday for the team’s best start in school history.

BYU wins Hyundai Lens of Loyalty film contest

BYU won $10,000 for the Hyundai Lens of Loyalty film contest to determine the nation’s most loyal fans.

Hyundai first contacted 25 university film programs to submit a one-page treatment for a film that would offer a glimpse into the traditions and passion of their fan base. From those treatments seven schools were selected and awarded with $10,000 to create the film. BYU won the additional $10,000 over finalists Alabama, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Oregon and Pittsburgh.

BYU basketball coach Dave Rose, Tyler Haws and Matt Carlino talk about their Wednesday night matchup against Prairie View A&M after practice. The Cougars will take on Prairie View A&M at the Marriott Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

Two Cougars receive All-Pacific South Region accolades

PROVO, Utah -- Two Cougar volleyball players received American Volleyball Coaches Association regional honors Tuesday following a second consecutive trip to the Sweet 16. 

Sophomore Alexa Gray received AVCA All-Pacific South Region honors. Gray leads the Cougars with 3.91 kills per set and averages 4.35 points per set. Earlier this season, she was named to the All-WCC first team and was a WCC Player of the Week in September. Last season, Gray was named AVCA All-Pacific Region Honorable Mention.

BYU will host Prairie View A&M on Wednesday, Dec. 11, in the Marriott Center at 7 p.m. MT. Wednesday's game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast live on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM and BYUcougars.com.

Cougars to face No. 6 USC in third round of NCAA tournament

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s volleyball will travel to Los Angeles on Friday to face No. 6 USC in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament.

After beating Arizona State in a five-set thriller in the first round of the tournament last Friday, the Cougars swept No. 11 Hawaii on their home court on Saturday to advance to the third round.

After a closely fought 52-51 road win at Creighton on Saturday, the BYU women’s basketball team (8-0) takes its undefeated record on the road for one last time in December. The Cougar women take a short trip to Ogden to battle in-state foe Weber State (4-3) on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the action live on BYU Radio.
