LaVell Edwards awarded Lifetime Achievement accolade

HOUSTON -- Legendary BYU head coach LaVell Edwards received the Paul "Bear" Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award Thursday at an awards ceremony in Houston.

Edwards coached the Cougars for 29 years and is currently No. 7 in FBS history for career wins with 257. In 20 of those 29 seasons, the Cougars claimed conference championships. He has been inducted into both the BYU and College Hall of Fame.

Gymnastics welcomes Boise State to Smith Fieldhouse on Saturday

PROVO, Utah – Returning home for the second home meet of the year, the BYU women’s gymnastics team hosts Boise State on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Last week BYU finished second with a 193.450 at the Texas Woman’s Quad Meet but suffered a difficult blow to the team when freshman Madeline Nilsson suffered an ACL injury. Nilsson has a promising gymnastics future and is one of best vaulters on the team.

With a 12-5 overall record, including a 3-1 mark in WCC play, the Cougar women’s basketball team continues league action with a Thursday game at home and a road game on Saturday.

BYU, who is in third place in this week’s conference standings, hosts LMU Thursday at 7 p.m., MST. The game can be seen live on BYUtv. They are at San Francisco on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m., PST. Fans can follow the action vs. the Dons live on BYU Radio.

Game notes: BYU at No. 10/10 Gonzaga

BYU basketball will play at No. 10/10 Gonzaga for share of first place in the West Coast Conference. The game is scheduled for 8 p.m. PST and will be broadcast on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM and televised on ESPN2.

Taylor Sander named AVCA National Player of the Week

PROVO, Utah - Junior Taylor Sander was named this week’s Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week, following his performance in No. 1 BYU’s win over then-No. 1 UC Irvine and then-No. 13 UC San Diego.

No. 58 BYU upsets No. 44 Columbia 4-3

Junior Patrick Kawka dominated the No. 44 ranked Winston Lin 6-0, 6-4 as BYU upset Columbia.

NEW YORK CITY – The No. 58 BYU men’s tennis team earned its second victory in three days as it upset the No. 44 Columbia Lions 4-3 at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center on Monday.

The Cougars topped Fordham on Saturday 6-1 and then beat a ranked Columbia team on Monday, both first time wins against either school.

“We played a very good Columbia team today,” head coach Brad Pearce said. “We feel very fortunate to come home with a win.”

Live from the KSL 5 TV studios, head coach Dave Rose started his show with a full recap of last week's games. BYU hosted Saint Mary's in a 70-69 buzzer-beater loss and also San Diego last Saturday in a 74-57 victory. The Cougars are now 5-1 in West Coast Conference action.

Against the Gaels, Rose highlighted Tyler Haws's performance. He finished with 23 points to lead the team.
