Note Taking

Tips For Effective Notetaking

  • Bring plenty of paper to class. Keep class notes separated according to course and organized chronologically.
  • Use a separate sheet of paper for each class period and record the date, course title, and topic for the day at the top of each page.
  • Make your notes legible, but do not worry about being picture-perfect.
  • Spread ideas out on the page to leave room for additional notes or comments during later study periods.
  • Write down only the main ideas. Do not attempt to write every word that is spoken in class. Important ideas are usually written on the board, repeated by the professor, and preceded by statements such as "this is important."
  • Use abbreviations when possible so you can spend more time listening.
  • Meet with a classmate to periodically review and compare your notes.
