Time Management

What are you going to do with your 168 hours this week? You alone will determine how successful you will be as a student-athlete by how effectively you manage your time.

Scheduling Your Academic Work

  1. Become familiar with your class syllabus for each course. Highlight the deadlines for quizzes, exams, papers, and projects.
  2. Write those deadlines in your Academic Planner.
  3. Breakdown each major assignment into small, manageable steps that can be carried out each week (see the schedule below).
  4. Have a weekly planning meeting to divide the workload for that week into daily tasks.
  5. Preview your daily schedule each morning to prepare you for the day and review it each night to evaluate what you accomplished. If certain tasks were not completed, reassign them to different days within the same week.

General Tips

  • Prioritize what needs to be done now and what can wait until later.
  • Set a realistic time limit for each task so you can pace yourself.
  • Complete the most difficult tasks while you are fresh. Save the easy tasks and those you enjoy most for times when you are least motivated to study.
  • Plan short study blocks between classes to get the most out of your time.
  • Build flexibility into your schedule and remember that you can modify your plans.
  • Schedule time for study breaks, recreation, and interacting with friends.
  • Learn to say "no" or "later" to those who distract you from your priorities.

Each semester is like an athletic contest. Stick to the game plan and consistently put forth good effort and you will give yourself a chance to win in the end!
