Shari Skabelund

Prior to BYU

She was the head coach of both the girls and boys swim teams at Springville High School from 1982-1987. She guided the girls' squad to the state 3A title in 1985 and 1986. In 1987 she led her girls team to a second-place state finish and her boys team to a fourth-place finish.

Skabelund has also coached the Springville Seals Aquatic Team since 1980, leading many of her swimmers to top-16 finishes in national age-group competitions and several berths in Junior National competition.

Personal/Family

She is married to Grant Skabelund and they have four children, Analyn, Andrew, Natalya and Joshua. Her oldest daughter, Analyn, swam for the Cougars from 2003-2005.

Shari Clark Skabelund continues to lend her expertise to the swim team as she enters her 23nd season as an assistant coach at BYU, working specifically with the sprint group. After serving for 20 years as an assistant women's coach, she now enters her third year working with both the men's and women's teams as part of BYU's combined coaching staff under longtime BYU coach Tim Powers.

In 2005, Skabelund was named the Assistant Coach of the Year at the annual Y Awards. She was the first woman swimmer at BYU to complete four years of eligibility. While competing for BYU, Skabelund won Region 18 titles in the 100-yard individual medley (1978) and the 100-yard butterfly (1980) and qualified for the AIAW Nationals in 1978 and 1979.
