PROVO, Utah (Nov. 10, 2003) As the women's basketball season approaches this month, BYU's women's basketball team has one more exhibition game on the schedule. The Cougars travel to nearby UVSC on Tuesday, Nov. 11 for a first-ever meeting between the two schools. Tip off is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Cougar women have one game under their belt so far this year, defeating Westminster College 74-67 last week in Salt Lake City.
BYU's lineup boasts a strong group of returning players headlined by junior forward standout Danielle Cheesman from Orem, Utah and Mountain View High School. Her support cast includes senior guard Kestlee Nelson Dooley and senior center Ashleigh Chamberlain both whom played at UVSC prior to joining the BYU program.
Junior forward Kristen Kozlowski who finished last year's season with a strong performance getting one of the starting spots late in the conference season last year along with sophomore's Jennie Overdiek, Ambrosia Anderson and Nancy Seljaas top the returning letterwinners list. Anderson led the BYU effort in last week's exhibition, coming off the bench for her 21 points and team high nine rebounds.
Also back for her third season with the Cougar program is guard Julie Sullivan who should be ready to play by the end of November. She tore her ACL last January.
Four new freshmen will be battling for playing time on the BYU team including three Utah natives. Mountain View High School standouts Hollie and Heather Hansen, who led their team to State championships will add depth in the guard position.
Joining the Hansen twins in the guard position is Melinda Johnsen, of Murray High School who will be a great addition on the outside. Tiari Goold, a guard from Milwaukie, Oregon will also add talent with her great passing skills and knowledge of the game.
Basketball fans should get an opportunity to see the entire Cougar lineup get some playing time in Tuesday's exhibition.
UVSC has already played two games this year, losing both to Weber State and to the University of Utah.
The Cougars open the regular season on Friday, Nov. 21 at Weber State before heading to Alaska to play in the Alaska Shootout on Nov. 25-26. BYU hosts its first game at the Marriott Center on Saturday, Nov. 29 taking on TCU in a 2 p.m. tip off.
