BYU's women's basketball team got back on track in the winning column with a huge 78-59 victory over AF on Saturday and are now 1-3 in conference play. This Sat., Jan. 31 the Cougars are back in MWC action hosting instate rival Utah in a 4 p.m., tip off.

A win over Air Force on Saturday got the Cougar women back on track in the MWC race. BYU defeated the Falcons 78-59 to capture their first league win of the season. Junior forward Danielle Cheesman led the way with 15 points followed by 12 points from Ashley Chamberlain and 11 from Ambrosia Anderson. The Cougars shot a season best 48 percent from the field, outrebounded the Falcons 48 to 41, and committed just 12 turnovers in the game.

Tina Gunn Robison Jersey To Be Retired At Utah Game

Legendary women's basketball great Tina Gunn Robison will be honored by having her jersey retired on Sat. Jan. 31at half-time of the BYU vs. Utah women's basketball game. Gunn played on BYU's team from 1976-1980.

During her senior season (79-80)m Tina gained the most coveted honor in women's basketball at that time, named to the Kodak All-America First Team. That same year she was also named to the American Women's Sports Federation First Team, and the National Scouting Association All-America Team. She was also a Wade Trophy Finalist (her second nomination) and was a WBL draft pick for Milwaukee.

Tina finished her career placing first in the nation in scoring (31.2ppg), fourth in rebounding (14.9 rpg) and 14th in field goal percentage (59).

Gunn received the 1979 Crow Pleaser Award from the Cougar Club and in 1980 was named the Outstanding Senior Athlete. In 1990, she was also named to the Cougar Club Hall of Fame.

The Judkins file

Overall Record: 54-28, is in his third season at BYU.

Entering the 2003-04 campaign, head coach Jeff Judkins, is back for a third year at the helm of the Cougar women's program.

Coach Judkins took the women's team to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.

An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.

He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.

After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.

He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (23), Jordan (21), Jenna (19), Jaime (16), Jaxson (13).

Coaching Milestone - 50th Win

On their home court in the first game of 2004, third year head coach Jeff Judkins tallied his 50th career win with the 59-54 victory over the University of San Francisco.

The Utes come to Provo this Saturday atop the MWC standings with a perfect 4-0 record, 14-4 overall. Last week, Utah hosted the same conference teams as BYU with the Utes picking up both wins. Leading the way in scoring for Utah is sophomore Kim Smith with 15.8 points per game. The 6-1 forward also tops the leader board in the rebound category, grabbing 7.0 boards a game. The next double digit scorer is also a sophomore, 5-10 guard Shona Thorburn. She tallies 12.0 points and 5.6 boards a game. As a tea, the Utes shoot 45 percent from the field, 69 percent at the line and 41 percent from behind the arc. After 18 games played, the team averages 66.7 points a game and holds opponents to just 53.8 points per game. The same five players have started every game to date for the University of Utah.

Last Meeting: The Cougars lost both league games to Utah last season, 50-67 in the Marriott Center and 66-71 at the Huntsman Center. During last year's MWC tournament in Las Vegas, BYU beat Utah 70-59 in the semifinal game.

Two of the players on this year's roster have a brother playing in the NBA. Travis Hansen, Atlanta Hawks is older brother to twins Heather and Hollie Hansen. Travis is in his rookie season, and was a two-year starter at BYU. At the start of the season Britton Johnsen was on the Orlando Magic's roster but has since been cut from the team. He is now playing on the NBDL (National Basketball Development League) . Johnsen was a four-year starter at the University of Utah. Freshman Melinda Johnsen is his younger sister.

SOPHOMORE - (2002-2003): In her second season with the BYU program she averaged 18.1 minutes per game, getting the starting on Dec. 30 vs. Montana State...averaged 5.1 points per game in conference play and 4.5 overall...contributed an overall shooting percentage of .421 and .714 from the free throw line going 20 for 28...made 13 3-pointers for the season... ending the season with a total of 39 assists and 20 steals...was 3 for 3 against University of Oregon on 12/07/02... was 2 for 2 behind the arc against Utah on 03/01/03, in that same game had a season and career high 16 points...had 4 steals against San Diego State on 02/22/03...played 14 minutes and pulled down 3 rebounds against Colorado in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

BYU takes to the road for its second to the last MWC road swing of the year. The team will play at UNLV on Thurs., Feb. 5 and at San Diego State on Sat., Feb. 5. BYU will be back at home hosting Wyoming and Colorado State on Feb. 12 and 14.
