DENVER -- The No. 19 BYU women's basketball team fell 84-60 to No. 21 Utah in the Mountain West Conference Tournament Championship game Saturday afternoon as the Utes handed the Cougars just their fifth loss of the season. Both teams will now await seeding for the 2006 NCAA Tournament, which will be announced on Monday.

"I think sometimes when you try really hard, things don't work as well or as easy as you hope," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "It just wasn't our night tonight. You have to give them a lot of credit; they played probably their best game. They always seem to play their best game against us."

Center Dani Kubik once again led the way for BYU with 12 points and nine rebounds. She was joined in double figures by MWC Co-Player of the Year Ambrosia Anderson with 11 points. Both Anderson and Kubik were named to the MWC All-Tournament Team. The Cougars shot just 37.7 percent from the field, including 25 percent from three-point range.

"We're going to get over this loss tonight," said Kubik. "We have the NCAA's to look forward to. We're going to hold our head up high and keep moving forward."

Utah's Heidi Carlson started the game hot, draining her first two three-point attempts for an early 6-0 lead. The shots kept falling for the Utes as they made five of their first seven to take a 13-4 lead and force a Cougar timeout at the 16:10 mark of the first half. BYU responded with five quick points on a layin from Kubik and a three-point bomb from Jennie Keele.

The Cougars held Utah's Kim Smith, the MWC Co-Player of the Year along with Anderson, scoreless through the first six minutes until a jumper at the 13:46 mark extended the Ute advantage to 15-9. A three-pointer on Utah's next trip down the floor equaled the game-high lead to that point at 18-9.

Anderson responded with her first points of the game on a jumper from the top of the key as the two teams traded baskets to a 22-13 Utah lead. Neither team scored for the next three minutes until Gillespie found the hoop at with 8:23 left in the half. Smith and Anderson then took turns showing why they were voted the top two players in the league with buckets on each end.

After trading baskets with the Utes for several minutes, the Cougars put together an 8-0 run to cut the Utah lead to one point at 26-25 with 4:59 left in the first half. However, the Utes managed to push it up to 12 points at 44-32 by the end of the half thanks to an 18-7 run of their own to end the period. BYU did not score from the field in the last 4:30, settling for four free throws. Utah's Julie Larsen went 7-for-7 from the field in the first half, including 5-for-5 from three-point range, for 19 points as Shona Thorburn dished out nine assists, one less than the entire BYU team.

The Cougars continued their cold field-goal shooting to start the second half as they did not score from the floor for the first 3:40, allowing Utah to open up a 52-34 lead. BYU got back-to-back buckets from Keele and Melinda Johnsen but traded scores with the Utes from there, playing to a 61-44 Utah lead with 11:03 left on the clock.

BYU picked up the intensity on the defensive end, holding Utah scoreless from the floor for the next six minutes but could not capitalize on the other end as the Cougars scored just two points of their own during the stretch while the Utes drained four free throws to take a 68-46 lead. Gillespie ended BYU's 4:50 scoring drought with a three-pointer at the 5:02 mark, but it was too little too late for the Cougars as Utah cruised to the 84-60 win.

Utah's Larsen led the way with 24 points while Thorburn recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists. Smith finished with 14. The Utes shot 55.8 percent from the field while their 84 points are the most allowed by BYU all season.
