After the victory over Utah on Sat., the BYU women’s basketball team improved its league record to 5-2 and is tied in first place with TCU and SDSU.
This Wed., Feb. 3, the Cougars (14-5, 5-2) are at No. 21 TCU (15-5, 5-2) in a 6:30 p.m. tip. On Sat., Feb. 6, BYU begins the second half of MWC play hosting UNLV (9-12, 2-5) at 2 p.m.

Team Starts MWC Race Strong
With a 5-2 record in league play, the Cougar women are off to their best start since the 2006-07 campaign when they began conference play with a 7-1 record, eventually winning the regular season crown with a 12-4 finish. That year they went on to play in the title game of the conference tournament before losing to New Mexico. The team went on to play a first round game in the NCAA Tournament.
Player Injury Report
Freshman guard Kim Parker suffered a season ending injury in the game at Weber State. She has torn ligaments in her left foot.
Sophomore guard Jenteal Jackson will apply for a medical redshirt for this year due to an on-going back problem.

Stephanie Vermunt, a 6-0 freshman guard/forward from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada will redshirt the 2009-10 season.
Senior guard Jaime Judkins and junior point guard Haley Hall have been selected by their teammates as co-captains for the 2009-10 season.

No. 20 TCU is tied with BYU and SDSU for first place in this week’s MWC standings with a 5-2, 15-5 record. The team’s two league losses were on the road at Wyoming and at New Mexico. At home they have a perfect 10-0 record and are also 3-0 in conference play. On the Horned Frogs team three players are putting up double digit points led by 15.0 from Emily Carter, 13.6 from Helena Sverrisdottir and 10.3 points from TK La Fleur. On the rebound category, Starr Crawford tops the list grabbing 9.2 boards a game. Sverrisdottir, a 6-1 junior forward, leads the team in assists and in steals with a total of 101 and 43 respectively. Jeff Mittie is in his 11th season as the women’s basketball coach at TCU.

A Look Back at the Series during the 2009 MWC Race
TCU and BYU split the series last year in MWC action with the Cougars picking a win in Ft. Worth, and the Horned Frogs getting a victory in Provo. In the series history, BYU has a 4-3 record when playing at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Last season, the Cougars captured a 62-46 victory and were the only team to beat the Horned Frogs at home during the MWC race.

Huge 3-point shooting from the Cougars couldn’t quite keep them on top as BYU fell to the Horned Frogs in the Marriott Center. Freshman Stephanie Buhler led BYU with a career-high nine points, all three-point shot attempts. Sophomore point guard Jazmine Foreman brought down nine rebounds to lead the Cougars. The BYU bench contributed 27 of the team’s total points, compared to TCU’s 14 bench points.

Junior guard Erica Helms is one of two players on the Rebels team scoring in double figures. She’s averaging 13.2 points and 2.1 rebounds a game. Kelli Thompson, a 6-0 freshman guard/forward combo follows with 12.7 points and 4.3 boards per contest. In the rebound category, sophomore guard/forward Jamie Smith tops the list grabbing 9.5 boards per game. Helms is also the team’s assist and steals leader with a total of 76 and 39 respectively. Kathy Olivier is in her second season as UNLV’s women’s basketball coach.

In the first game of the MWC 2010 season the Cougars and Rebels met in Las Vegas on Jan.6 with the visiting BYU team picking up the 10-point 71-61 victory. When playing in Provo UNLV has a 2-13 record. Their last win in the Marriott Center was during the 2003-04 when the Rebels picked up a 67-59 victory on Mar. 6, 2004.
