Second Place Women Host Two MWC Games This Week

With just six MWC games left, the BYU women’s basketball team is in second place in the latest league standings with a 7-3 record.

The team is at home this week hosting CSU and WY. The Cougars (16-6, 7-3) will battle the Rams on Wed. Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Wyoming (15-8, 6-5) comes to the Marriott Center on Sat. Feb. 20 for a 2 p.m. matchup.

Team Has Strong Showing In The MWC 2009-10 Race

With a 7-3 record in league play, the Cougar women continue to have success in the conference. The team is all alone in second place with just six games to go, for a team that was picked to finish sixth in the conference.

The team’s best start in league play was during the 2006-07 campaign when they finished the first half of league play with a 7-1 record, eventually winning the regular season crown with a 12-4 finish. That year they went on to play in the title game of the conference tournament before losing to New Mexico. The team went on to play a first round game in the NCAA Tournament.

Player Injury Report

Freshman guard Kim Parker suffered a season ending injury in the game at Weber State. She has torn ligaments in her left foot.

Sophomore guard Jenteal Jackson will apply for a medical redshirt for this year due to an on-going back problem.

Freshman To Redshirt

Stephanie Vermunt, a 6-0 freshman guard/forward from Airdrie, Alberta, Canada will redshirt the 2009-10 season.

Team Captains

Senior guard Jaime Judkins and junior point guard Haley Hall have been selected by their teammates as co-captains for the 2009-10 season.

COLORADO STATE - Wed. Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. MST (Provo, Utah) - Marriott Center

Colorado State has compiled a 12-11, 4-6 record to date and are in seventh place in the most updated MWC standings. In their last league game, the Rams beat the Air Force Academy 80-46 in Ft. Collins on Feb. 9. Two players are scoring in double figures for the Rams led by Kim Mestdagh’s 16.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. She’s followed by sophomore forward Chatilla van Grinsven who scores 11.4 points and grabs 6.3 boards per game. Megan Heimstra is the team’s leading rebounder with an average of 8.1 boards per game and she also tops the list in assists dishing out 2.4 per game. Mestdagh has the most steals to date with a total of 48. Head coach Kristen Holt is in her second season at the helm of the women’s basketball team at CSU.

In the first match up between these two teams during the 2010 MWC campaign, the visiting Cougars grabbed a 67-58 victory on Jan. 16 in Ft. Collins. When playing in Provo the Rams have compiled a 6-25 record. Their last win at the Marriott Center was on Feb. 14, 2004, a 72-64 decision.

WYOMING - Sat. Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. MST (Provo, Utah) - Marriott Center

Wyoming comes into this week’s MWC action with a 15-8, 6-5 record and are in a three-way tie with New Mexico and San Diego State. This week they host the University of Wyoming on Wed. Feb. 17 before making the trip to Provo for Saturday afternoon’s game. Three Cowgirls are scoring in double digits led by junior forward Hillary Carlson who scores 15.3 points a game and grabs 6.3 boards. She’s followed by Aubrey Vandiver who contributes 13.3 points and grabs a team high 9.8 boards per contest. Rounding out the double figure scoring is sophomore forward Emma Langford’s 11.9 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. She also has the most assists on the team with a total of 76 while Vandiver tops the list in the steals category with a total of 38 to date. Head coach Joe Legerski is in his seventh year with the Wyoming program.

-- The Saturday afternoon game between the Cougars and Cowgirls is the team’s “Pink Zone” game which is part of a nationwide campaign sponsored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to raise breast cancer awareness. BYU is one of over 1,500 teams that have scheduled a Pink Zone game during Feb. 12-21. The WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the nation’s coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court.

WHAT’S NEXT

After the two home league games this week, the BYU women’s basketball team will make its final road trip of the MWC campaign. They will take on San Diego State on Wed. Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. The Cougars then travel to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Lobos on Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. That game is scheduled to air live on CBS College Sports at 4 p.m.
