Thorn Leads Cougars To First Ever NCAA Tourney Win

The BYU bench celebrates as the Cougars dominate the favored Gators on the court

AMES -- All-American Erin Thorn's 28-point stellar performance lifted the BYU women's basketball team to a huge 90-52 upset victory over No. 6 seed Florida Saturday, in first round action from the Midwest Regional of this year's NCAA Tournament.

The win is the first ever for the Cougar program in the NCAA post-season tournament that improves to 23-8 on the year. Florida finished its season with an 18-12 record.

BYU came out on fire to set the tone for the game, enjoying a four-point lead in the first three minutes of play. The team extended its lead by eight at the 15:53 minute mark and led by 10,(17-7) seven minutes into the game. The Cougars offensive play and tough defense smothered the Florida team who only scored 18 points in the first half and were held to just 15 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.

The No. 11 seeded Cougars went into the locker room with a very comfortable 21-point, 39-18 lead, coming out just as strong in the second half, extending their margin by 31, 52-21 after five minutes of action.

"We played really well today and it was a great team effort," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We spread the court out really well and we did a good job of not letting them get good shots."

Thorn's 28-point performance included seven three pointers, a stat that ties the NCAA Midwest First/Second Round record. It was Thorn's fourth career game where she's tallied seven treys.

Jennifer Leitner picked up her 10th double-double of the season, and 13th of her career with 17 points and 17 rebounds. The 17 boards set a new season and career record for the junior forward.

After the game, Coach Judkins complemented the performances of Thorn, Leitner and Lisa Osguthorpe. "I knew these guys could win the game. They worked hard, didn't come out scared and I was really happy for this team," said Judkins.

Freshman Danielle Chessman had another impressive performance, contributing 13 points and seven boards to the team's win.

The Cougars finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field, 73 percent from the free throw line and made 10 of 21 three-point buckets. The Gators shot 26 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Senior guard Brandi McCain led the Florida team with 28 points and six rebounds. Courtney Cooper had a team-high 12 rebounds in the contest.

BYU advances to the Midwest Second Round and plays the winner of the Iowa State vs. Temple game on Monday night, Mar. 18. That game is set for a 9:36 p.m., CST tip off, 8:36 p.m. Mountain.

Cougar fans can hear the game locally on KOVO Radio 960 AM, with play by play by Chris Tunis or listen live on the Internet. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN2.
