PROVO -- BYU women's basketball head coach Jeff Judkins announced the 2003-04 schedule Wednesday. The Cougar women will play a total of 30 games including five teams that went to last year's NCAA tournament, as well as one PAC-10 opponent and one team from the ACC.
"We're excited to be able to play so many teams from the west this year," said Judkins. "We feel that the schedule will benefit our young team. We hope to have a great pre-season to give our young players experience since we've lost so many great players from last year's roster."
Following two exhibition games against local schools Westminster and UVSC, the Cougar women open the regular season at instate rival Weber State on Nov. 21. Then the team is off to play in the prestigious Great Alaska Shootout Nov. 25-26. On Tuesday, Nov. 25 the Cougars tip off against Clemson from the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference. The following day BYU will either take on hosts Alaska Anchorage or Mount St. Mary's.
During the Thanksgiving holiday the Cougars return home to host TCU a former WAC member, now with Conference USA on Nov. 29 in their first home game of the year. Tip off for that game is set for 4 p.m.
As in years past, December makes for road wary Cougars as the team spends two straight weeks competing on the road starting on the 2nd at Nevada-Reno. Then its off to northern California for a match up at Santa Clara on Dec. 4 and at CS Fullerton on the 9th. Three days later the BYU team as at PAC-10 and 2003 NCAA participant Arizona on Dec. 12. The end of December brings the Cougars home for a match up with Idaho State on Dec. 20 and instate rival Southern Utah on Dec. 30.
The 2004 year opens with a home game for the Cougars hosting San Francisco on Jan.3. Three road games with Big Sky teams finish the non-conference schedule for Jeff Judkins and company. BYU travels to Montana State on Jan. 6, to Northern Arizona on Jan.8, eventually finishing at Portland State on Jan. 10.
The Mountain West Conference schedule is expected to be as tough this year as in any previous season. Three conference schools including BYU went to last year's NCAA tournament. In 2004 the Cougars open league play on the road traveling to Ft. Collins on Jan. 15 for a game with CSU, a 2003 NCAA tournament participant and then its off to Laramie, Wyoming to meet the Cowgirls on Jan. 17.
Conference foes New Mexico, Air Force and Utah all make appearances in the Marriott Center on Jan. 22, 24, and 31, respectively. The Lobos and Utes also had impressive showings in last year's post-season tournament.
In February the Cougars start and end the month on the road with conference games at UNLV on Feb. 5 and at SDSU on Feb. 7. Wyoming and Colorado State come to Provo on Feb. 12 and 14. MWC opponent Air Force hosts BYU on Feb. 19, then its off to "The Pitt" in Albuquerque for a match with MWC tournament champions New Mexico on Feb. 21. The Cougars are at instate rival Utah on Feb. 28 before finishing conference action at home hosting SDSU on Mar. 4 and UNLV on Mar. 6.
This year the MWC Championships will be played at the Pepsi Center in Denver for the first time. The BYU women hope to take their luck from Las Vegas to Denver as the team has played in all four of the previous title games of the conference tournament.
