LAS -- A five-under-par second round kept the 14th ranked BYU Women's Golf Team on top of the field at the UNLV Spring Invitational on Tuesday.

With the second under-par round in a row; for the first time ever in BYU women's golf history, the Cougars extended their lead three more shots to a 13-under-par 563, seven shots ahead of Indiana University.

"I'm delighted of how we scored but I'm not surprised," said assistant coach Dave DeSantis, "This team is right on track to put BYU women's golf on the map."

Senior Rachel Newren had a solid round and held on to her lead with a two-under-par 70 for the second round.

"I'm hitting the ball very well," said Newren, "I hope to get the same type of control with my driver tomorrow."

Senior Danielle von Arnim lowered her personal-best by three more shots from Monday by firing a four-under-par 68. After a couple of back-to-back birdies, von Arnim holed an eagle from 132 yards to put her at four-under-par for the round and third for the tournament.

" I am striking the ball very well," said von Arnim "It feels good to see that what I worked on over the Christmas break is showing in my game."

The Cougars have a third golfer in the top 10. With a steady even-par 72, Natalia Jimenez is three-under-par for the tournament and tied for seventh. Daphne Vines matched her Monday score (one-over-par 73) and is tied for 23rd. Juli Erekson shot a five-over-par 77 and is tied for 62nd.

A jammed freeway kept the Cougars from arriving on time, and cost freshman Hannah Summerhays a two-stroke penalty. She shot a seven-over-par 79 and is tied for 78th.

The final round will start tomorrow morning with Cougar tee times starting at 9 am. Follow the action live on
