BYU Edges No. 12 New Mexico in Sixth Place Finish

CORVALLIS -- Despite recording its worst round of the tournament, BYU played well enough to beat No. 12 New Mexico by one stroke Wednesday at the Oregon State Shanico Invitational played at the Trysting Tree Golf Club.

"It's a big confidence builder to play with the best and stick with them," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "We didn't finish as strong as we would like, but its nice to beat a ranked team."

The Cougars finished the tournament scoring 296-299-312 over 54 holes for a combined 907. California and No.18 Arizona both finished the tournament with a for a three-round combined 882. California was decalred the victor, having the low-scoring fifth player in the third round.

"Our team is making progress, we just need to be more consistent," Nyhus said.

Carrie Summerhays finished tied for eighth at five over par. Jessica Gardner finished tied for 25, while Nicole Newren and sister Natalie Newren finished tied for 40 and 47 respectively. Lisa Dernick struggled in the final round finished tied for 50.

The Cougars will enjoy a 10-day break before they travel to Eagle, Idaho for the Boise State Fall Classic, Oct. 21-23.
