BYU Looks to Finish Strong in Final Round

BYU gears up for a strong finish in the third round tomorrow

LAS -- The BYU women's golf team came out strong in the second round of the UNLV Spring Invitational, shooting a 22-over-par 310, 15 strokes better than yesterday's round (325).

Despite improving on the previous round, the Cougars' were unable to make up ground on the leader board, falling into 9th place (635) behind Nevada (631). No. 23 USC leads the field at 601, followed by No. 19 Arizona in second place at 614 and No. 5 Pepperdine in third place at 619.

"We had a lot of good things happen today," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus. "We're still learning, growing and getting better. We're gearing up for a strong finish to the spring season."

Senior Margaret Gibby-Wright climbed out of the hole she dug into yesterday, leading the Cougars in the second round with a 3-over-par 75, her third-best round this season and the best round of the tournament for the Cougars.

Sophomore Rachel Newren had another great day on the course, shaving three strokes off her score of 79 from yesterday with a 4-over-par 76 and remaining in a 17th-place tie. Freshman Juli Wightman also had another great round, shooting a 6-over-par 78 in the second round and finishing in a tie for 25th place.

Rounding off the Cougars' team score after the second round was sophomore Alexis Edwards with a 9-over-par 81. Sophomore Danielle von Arnim finished with a second-round 84, one stroke better than yesterday (85).

According to Nyhus, the Cougars are starting to come around with their individual performances and are ready for a strong finish in the tournament tomorrow.

"We're ready for a great round tomorrow," Nyhus said. "We're just going to be more strategic with our tee shots and work on getting the ball in position for the approach shots to the green."
