Cougar Golf Finishes Fifth After First Round

Seattle, WA -- After the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, freshman Rachel Newren leads the BYU women's golf team in fifth place above Stanford and host Washington.

Competing at the Sahalee Country Club, a classic West Coast golf course, the Cougars started strong with three golfers ranked in the top 15. Newren, the youngest of the three Newren sisters on the team, tied at seventh place and shot even par as BYU's top individual.

"The team played quite well today," assistant coach Dave DeSantis said. "This round was a good test for us. Everyone has a great attitude that we can win, not just place among the top."

Junior Natalie Newren tied for 14th place along with freshman Alexis Edwards, both shooting two-over-par. Natalie shot one birdie in the front nine and only one bogey in the back nine. Edwards hit better in the back nine, with two birdies in the last two holes.

The other two Cougar golfers, junior Margaret Gibby and senior Nicole Newren-Chandler, struggled in the back nine and finished the first round at 49th and 57th respectively.

"We have a great opportunity to move up in tomorrow's round," DeSantis said. "We made a great first step today and hope to improve our level of play tomorrow.

With 17 teams competing at the Ihlanfeldt, BYU has continued its resilient play from its fifth-place finish at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque over Sept. 25-27. Shooting a twelve-over-par, the Cougars will tee off tomorrow at 9 a.m. with Stanford and UCLA.
