Cougars in 14th after NCAA West Regional first round

STANFORD -- BYU's women's golf team is in 14th place after the first round of the 2004 NCAA West Regional held at the par 72 Stanford Golf Course (6,159) in Stanford, Calif.

Starting the tournament with an afternoon tee time, the Cougars were hampered by hard, fast greens and thick rough, but were still able to meet expectations. The Cougars entered the tournament as the fifteen seed and are currently tied with fellow MWC member San Diego State and Cal-State Northridge in fourteenth place.

True freshman Rachel Newren led the Cougars in her first 18 holes of NCAA Regional competition after going three-over-par 75, and is currently tied for 29th place.

"Altogether is was good day," Rachel Newren said. "I was able to stick it close to the pin and stay out of the thick rough for most of the day."

Natalie Newren finished one shot behind her sister at four-over-par and is tied for 35th. Senior Nicole Newren-Chadler finished seven-over 79 while freshman Alexis Edwards went eight-over 80 on the day. Junior Margaret Gibby, who has been the team's most consistent golfer all season, struggled in the first round going nine-over 81.

UCLA leads the field of 21 with a score of 282 (-6) while California currently holds second place at 290 (+2) and Stanford is third with a mark of 293 (+5). The Top 8 teams following the final round of competition Saturday will move on to the 2004 NCAA Championships in Auburn, Ala.

BYU is just seven strokes out of the critical eighth-place position and will tee off at 7:30 a.m. PST and try to climb the leaderboard. BYU best NCAA regional finish is 11th place in 1993 and has never advanced to the NCAA Championship round.

"We need to go out tomorrow and play well, stay strong, and make it happen," Natalie Newren said.
