KANE'OHE -- The No. 14 BYU women's golf team battled the constant Hawaii winds on Monday, shooting rounds of 17-over-par 305 and 25-over-par 313 in the first 36 holes of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.

With most scores in the high seventies, the Cougars had a mediocre day as they sit in fourth place tied with Colorado State and Ohio State. University of Arizona leads the tournament by one over Texas A&M and Rolling College follows in third place.

"It was a good learning day for everybody as we played in these challenging conditions," said head coach Sue Nyhus, "Hopefully we'll take the things we learned today, and elevate our games to another level tomorrow."

Freshman Daphne Vines led the pack of Cougars with scores of three-over-par 75 and six-over-par 78 to finish tied for 14th after the first day of competition.

"I was expecting to see much lower scores from the field but the course played tough today," said Vines, "I know as a team we will play better tomorrow because we have adjusted our games to the conditions."

Rachel Newren and Natalia Jimenez follow Vines both with scores of four-over-par 76 and seven-over-par 79. Newren and Jimenez are tied for 21st.
