SAHALEE C.C., Wash. (Oct. 4, 2004)--A thick fog slowed the BYU women's golf team during the first round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.

The fog delayed the start of the tournament for approximately 90 minutes, but even then the fog was still dense.

"Our first girls played when it was still foggy," BYU Coach Sue Nyhus said. "They were kind of playing blind. You couldn't see where your ball was landing."

Despite all the problems with the fog, the Cougars managed to put up some respectable scores to finish the day in eighth place.

Senior Margaret Gibby put up the team's top score of the day with a 5-over 77. She played especially well on the front nine carding a 37. Her two birdies on the day also came in the front nine.

Freshmen Juli Wightman and Ashley Childers also played well for the Cougars, falling just one stroke behind Gibby. Wightman tallied two birdies on the day, while Childers led the team with 10 pars.

The Newren sisters also contributed to the Cougars play. Rachel stroked an 81 and Natalie an 84.

Although the Cougars are happy to be in the top-10, they are not satisfied with today's performance. The team is anxious to work out the kinks and get back on the course tomorrow.

"We need to make quicker adjustments," Nyhus said. "We've got three full days here to improve."

Play resumes Tuesday morning weather permitting. The Invitational can be followed live at or by accessing the link at
