TUCSON -- After one round at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, the BYU women's golf team sits in 15th place at 25-over-par.

"We're losing shots where we know better," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus. "As we continue playing, those will disappear and we'll improve."

Junior Natalia Jimenez leads the Cougars tied for 45th place at 5-over-par. Senior Juli Erekson and Sophomore Daphne Vines, both tied for 50th place at 6-over-par, follow Jimenez.

The Arizona Wildcat Invitational is a 16-team tournament including 92 competitors and is being held at the par-71 Arizona National Golf Course. Twelve of the 16 teams in the field are nationally ranked, including Duke (1), UCLA (2), Arizona State (3), and Arizona (4).

Nyhus hopes for the team to improve in the second round.

"I look forward to the team playing with confidence and poise," she said. "We've got great golfers on our team, and they're competing in a strong field."

The Wildcat Invitational continues Tuesday and Wednesday with 18 holes each day. Tee times are scheduled from 8 to 9:40 a.m. MST.
