BEND -- The Cougars shot their best team total of the season, four-over 288, to finish in third place at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Women's Golf Championship held at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore.

With the third place finish, the Cougars earn their best Mountain West Conference Tournament finish in four years and their best conference finish under current BYU head coach Sue Nyhus.

"We played great, right from the very first hole on the day," Nyhus said. "We are really peaking at the right time as a team right now."

For the first time in the history of the Mountain West Conference someone other than New Mexico took home the women's golf championship trophy. No. 20 UNLV edged out No. 5 New Mexico by two strokes to take home the hardware. UNLV was led by individual winner Sunny Oh, who shot three-under 68 on the final day to jump in front of BYU's Margaret Gibby.

Gibby, who led the field after the first two rounds, finished in fourth place after a three-over 74 final round. This was Gibby's strongest tournament of the season.

"She had a very impressive tournament," Nyhus said. "She played outstanding golf all three days. To finish one-over in the conference championship really says a lot."

The three Newren sister all had strong finishes as the all placed in the top 20. Nicole Newren-Chandler had the best final day for the Cougars going one-under 70 in her final MWC Tournament round. Nicole's 221 total and 14th-place finish were her best of the season. Freshman Rachel finished even on the day and tied for 15th place, while Natalie shot a final round two-over to place 19th. Freshman Alexis Edwards finished in 23rd place after a final round 75.

The Cougars now prepare for an invitation to the NCAA West Regional held in Stanford, Calif. BYU hopes to receive an official announcement on Monday, April 26.
